MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, commonly referred to as MP3, is a popular digital audio format that uses a lossy compression algorithm to reduce the file size of audio files while still retaining reasonable sound quality. MP3 files are widely used for music and other audio content, due to their small size and compatibility with a variety of devices and software.
MP3 was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), and was first introduced in the late 1990s. Since then, it has become one of the most widely used audio formats, and has largely replaced earlier formats such as WAV and AIFF for many users.
Despite its widespread use, the MP3 format has some limitations, including a reduced audio quality compared to lossless formats like FLAC and ALAC. However, for many users the tradeoff in sound quality is outweighed by the convenience and portability of MP3 files.
